Representative Alia Nassif called on the Prime Minister to end the monopolistic contracts in the Ministry of Electricity, especially the contracts of companies that Iraq previously contracted with in billions, and electricity is still without any improvement, stressing the need to find out the imbalance and prosecute the corrupt in this sector.
And she said in a statement today: “The American General Electric Company leads the monopolistic companies, which despite contracting with it several times and for billions of dollars, did not improve the electricity service, and we did not witness an increase in the hours of supplying electricity.”
And she indicated that: “A contract was signed with General Electric in June 2008 to establish power stations, and a contract was signed with it in December 2008 to establish stations with a capacity of 7 thousand megawatts, and it was contracted with it in January 2016 to implement a project to increase electric power at a cost of 328 million dollars. A long-term strategic framework agreement was signed with General Electric in April 2016 that includes several projects to support the national electricity grid, and it was contracted in January 2017 to establish two power stations in southern Iraq at a cost of $1.49 billion, and in October 2018 a memorandum of understanding was signed with it to develop the electricity infrastructure. And we have the right to ask: Where is the result? And what did the Iraqis benefit from this company when the hours of electricity supply are still very few, especially in the summer? And the citizen still pays a large sum of money to the owners of private generators every month.”
Nassif emphasized, “The Prime Minister must end the monopolistic contracts that have drained the state without the citizen benefiting from anything, and that he search for imbalances and put an end to corruption in the electricity sector.”
