The Parliamentary Committee for Combating Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances intends to meet with Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani to inform him of its recommendations regarding amending the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, indicating that it is in the process of conducting field visits to addicts’ isolation centers and asylums, as well as prisons, including a visit to Jordan.

The head of the committee, Adnan al-Juhaishi, explained in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “the committee was formed by a parliamentary order on the tenth of May with the aim of amending the Drug Law of 2017, and the second goal is to follow up and monitor the recommendations that were issued and voted on by the House of Representatives.” He added that “during the past two months there were Many intensive meetings with the religious authority, the President of the Republic and the Minister of Interior, as well as with the National Anti-Narcotics Authority headed by the Minister of Health, as well as meetings with a group of Turkish, Emirati, Kuwaiti, British, German and other ambassadors. All these meetings are in order to know the latest developments in the world in terms of drug control in order to conduct amendment
on the Anti-Narcotics Law. Al-Juhaishi continued, "Iraq was a passage for drugs, but it turned into a large consumer, and even a drug-making factory was seized," expressing his fear that "Iraq will turn into a drug factory, which calls for a more fierce war against this dangerous scourge." He pointed to the importance of “the role of international organizations in providing advice and assistance in amending the law,” noting that “this month, the committee will visit Egypt and Jordan at the invitation of the two countries to learn about their experiences, as well as sanatoriums, isolation homes and prisons in them.”
