Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani invited NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg to visit Baghdad, emphasizing the importance of consolidating the relationship between NATO and Iraq in order to establish local and regional stability.
The invitation came during a meeting between Al-Sudani and Stoltenberg on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York.
Analyzes indicate that Al-Sudani's step is of great importance, given that NATO has a major role through its members in achieving regional and global security, and this matter is important for Iraq, which faces security threats from armed terrorist groups represented by ISIS.
Cooperation between Iraq and NATO can help strengthen the Iraqi economy, attract foreign investments, enhance democracy and stability in Iraq, and train the Iraqi armed forces on the latest military technologies.
The government of Muhammad al-Sudani is aware that there is opposition to NATO’s role in Iraq, as well as political differences between Iraq and some NATO countries, such as Turkey.
But the potential benefits of strengthening the relationship between Iraq and NATO outweigh the challenges. This cooperation can help enhance Iraq's stability and prosperity.

Al-Sudani says that the government is in the process of reviewing the form of the relationship with the international coalition in light of the readiness of the Iraqi security forces, which resulted in the formation of a bilateral committee, the holding of multiple dialogues, and the visit of a delegation from the Ministry of Defense to Washington to follow up on this matter and discuss the development and training of the Iraqi forces.
