    Today, Sunday (October 29, 2023), the specialist in election affairs, Falah Al-Mishaal, revealed how the candidates spent very large sums of money on their election propaganda.
    Al-Mishaal told “Baghdad Today” that “the electoral propaganda funds for some of the candidates of the influential blocs and parties are made through political and public money, and that is why we find that the propaganda of party candidates is completely different from the propaganda of independent candidates in terms of financial expenditures, as there is money spent largely on Propaganda of influential blocs and parties.”
    He stated, “There are professions that will flourish as the elections approach, in printing presses as well as blacksmiths, in addition to some specialized advertising companies, which own distinct advertising sites in the capital, Baghdad, and some other provinces. For this reason, distinct sites have been reserved for some blocs from now, and this matter is done through spending Very high amounts of money.”
    On Wednesday (October 25, 2023), the Election Commission set the launch date for the media campaign for candidates for the governorate council elections scheduled for next December 18.
    Commission spokeswoman Jumana Al-Ghalai told the official agency, “The media campaign for the candidates will begin next November 1.”
    She indicated that "the approval of election candidates will take place on October 30 or 31."
    The provincial council elections will be held according to the “Saint-Lego” method, which depends on dividing the coalition votes by the electoral denominator (1.7).
    These will be the first local elections held in Iraq since April 2013.
    It is assumed that 296 political parties organized into 50 alliances will participate in the elections, in addition to more than 60 candidates who will participate on individual lists, to compete for 275 seats, the total number of provincial council seats, 75 of which have been allocated, within a quota for women, and 10 seats for ethnic and religious minorities, according to For official data.
    The elected provincial councils are responsible for selecting the governor and the governorate’s executive officials, and have the powers of dismissal and appointment, and approving the project plan according to the financial budget allocated to the governorate by the central government in Baghdad, in accordance with the constitution.
