Shafaq News/ The Kurdistan Organizations Network warned, today, Thursday, of a rise in poverty rates in the governorates of the Kurdistan Region, due to the delay in disbursing salaries for three consecutive months and the rise in the dollar exchange rate.
A member of the network of organizations, head of the Kurdistan Economic Development Organization, Hassan Al-Barzanji, told Shafaq News Agency that the organization’s network works according to a program that continues until 2030, and it works to implement five of the seventeen goals set by the United Nations in 2015 until 2030, aiming to reduce poverty in the world. Pointing out that Iraq and the region are signed to implement these goals within the specified period.
He added that the five goals that the network of organizations in Kurdistan is working on are poverty, violence, health, environment, education, transparency and accountability, noting that the network has developed a strategic plan to implement those five goals until 2030.
Regarding the effects of not disbursing the salaries of public sector employees, Al-Barzanji stated that not distributing them for three consecutive months, and after monitoring the market movement, which declined significantly over the past four months and the decline in profits, made us expect, based on the data we obtained, that poverty rates increased during the last period.
He stressed that the latest statistics indicate that the poverty rate in Sulaymaniyah amounted to about 3% and one-tenth of a degree, and the poverty rate in Erbil reached 4% and one-tenth of a degree, and in Dohuk it was 6% and one-tenth of a degree, while the poverty rate in Iraq reached More than 22% throughout Iraq, but with varying percentages exceeding 50% in some governorates.
Al-Barzanji explained that the rise that accompanied the salary crisis during the last period also affected the rise in poverty rates, due to the region’s dependence of a large proportion of its market movement on imports in hard currency, while a large number of the region’s citizens receive their salaries and inputs in the local currency, which declined due to the rise in the dollar, which created a difference. A significant increase in the prices of goods and the purchasing power of citizens.
