    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Tuesday (November 28, 2023), Representative Youssef Al-Sabaawi revealed the reason for preventing Baghdad from entering the Gaza truce negotiations, while noting that Baghdad’s regional role has recently escalated.
Al-Sabaawi said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "Iraq's position on the Palestinian issue is firm and firm, and it stems from its belief in the rights of its people to freedom and the liberation of their land, pointing out that Iraq does not recognize the existence of Israel, so it cannot enter into negotiations in which one of the parties does not officially recognize it."
He explained, "Iraq cannot engage in any negotiations, whether a truce or any other, regarding the issue of Gaza and the rest of the Palestinian cities, but it condemned the brutal massacres carried out by the Zionist entity and called on the Security Council and the countries to take a decisive stance against the bloodshed and provide aid."
Al-Sabawi pointed out that "Baghdad's regional role has been increasing in recent years, and its position on the Palestinian issue is supported by all Iraqi components without exception, as it is a fundamental issue related to the rights of a people who have been struggling to achieve their goals for 70 years to get rid of the occupation."
Last Saturday, Egyptian and Qatari intervention succeeded in overcoming the obstacles that delayed Hamas' release of Israeli hostages on the second day of the truce, after it accused Israel of not adhering to the standards of the agreement.
Reuters quoted a spokesman for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs as announcing that obstacles to the release of detainees had been removed through Qatari-Egyptian communications.
A Palestinian official familiar with the mediation confirmed that the problem, which delayed the second phase of the hostage release after Egyptian intervention, had been resolved, according to Reuters.
The truce became threatened when Hamas announced that it had decided to delay the release of the second batch of detainees until Israel adhered to the terms of the agreement related to the entry of relief trucks into the northern Gaza Strip and due to non-compliance with the agreed-upon standards for releasing Palestinian detainees.
Then Israeli media, citing an unnamed security source, said that Israel would resume the military operation in Gaza if Hamas did not release the hostages by midnight on Saturday, according to Reuters.
Hamas spokesman Osama Hamdan said in a press conference on Saturday that Israel is not adhering to its side of the truce agreement and that the movement informed the mediators of the Israeli violations.
