Iraq later changes its vote due to a technical problem
The vote of the countries as reported by the United Nations.
Iraq complained of a technical error in voting in favor of the Arab project in the United Nations General Assembly, which calls for an immediate humanitarian truce between Israel and Hamas and demands the entry of aid into the Gaza Strip and the protection of civilians.
Who voted for or against the General Assembly's decision to establish a truce in Gaza?
Iraq's vote in favor of the resolution was later changed from abstention to support after it complained of a technical problem, and the final vote became passing the resolution with a majority of 121 votes and 44 abstentions.
The resolution was opposed by 14 countries, including Israel and the United States, with a European division over the resolution, as the support of a two-thirds majority out of 193 members of the General Assembly was required to pass the resolution, without taking into account those who abstained from voting.
An attempt led by Canada to amend the resolution to include rejection and denunciation of “Hamas’ terrorist attacks... and its taking of hostages” failed to obtain the necessary two-thirds majority, as it received 88 votes in favour, while 55 objected and 23 abstained from voting.
With growing fears that the conflict could lead to a wider war, the General Assembly stressed “the importance of preventing further destabilization and escalation of violence in the region,” and called on “all parties to exercise the utmost restraint and called on all those with influence over them to work to achieve this.” the goal".
The General Assembly called on Israel to cancel its order for civilians in Gaza to move to the south of the Strip. Israel ordered about 1.1 million people in Gaza, nearly half the population, to move south on October 12.
The General Assembly added that it “strongly rejects any attempts to forcibly transfer the Palestinian civilian population.”
The General Assembly called for “the immediate and unconditional release of all illegally detained civilians,” and did not mention Hamas anywhere in the text.
Guterres: History will judge us
In a statement, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of the deteriorating conditions in the Gaza Strip, saying that without fundamental change, the people of Gaza will face an unprecedented torrent of human suffering. Everyone must bear their responsibilities. It is the moment of facing the truth. History will judge us all.
The statement said
The humanitarian system in Gaza faces total collapse with unimaginable consequences for more than 2 million civilians, and as the bombing intensifies, so does the need.
Before the start of hostilities, about 500 trucks crossed into Gaza daily. In recent days, only 12 trucks enter daily on average, even though the needs are much greater than ever before.
In addition, the meager supplies that enter do not include fuel needed for UN operations – fuel that is also indispensable for running hospitals, desalination plants, food production and aid distribution.
Given the desperate and tragic situation, the United Nations will not be able to continue providing aid inside Gaza without an immediate and fundamental shift in how aid arrives.
The system for checking the movement of goods through the Rafah crossing must be modified to allow a much larger number of trucks to enter Gaza without delay.
We must meet the basic expectations and needs of civilians in Gaza.
Life-saving humanitarian aid – food, water, medicine and fuel – must be allowed to reach all civilians quickly, safely and in the necessary volume.
I welcome the growing global consensus on a humanitarian truce in the conflict. I reiterate my call for a humanitarian ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, and the delivery of life-saving supplies in the required volume. The state of misery increases every minute.
