    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Thursday (December 28, 2023), the US Ambassador to Baghdad, Elena Romanowski, made a “strange” statement regarding Iraq’s import of wheat next year.
Romanowski said in a tweet followed by “Baghdad Today”: “Did you know that Iraq will import 3.8 million metric tons of wheat during the next year, to meet all Iraqis’ bread requirements?”, noting that American companies will help meet the growing demand for wheat in Iraq while The Iraqi government increases the production of locally grown wheat.”

This statement is considered “surprising,” given that Iraq planted nearly 8 million dunums this year, most of it wheat, with 1.5 million dunums irrigated with surface water, 4 million dunums with groundwater, and about 3 million other dunums that depend on perennial and semi-permanent water, that is, “rain.” .
This area produces more than 5 million dunums of wheat, while Iraq’s need for wheat is only 4.5 million dunums, which means that what will be produced will be essentially surplus to need, and Iraq may need, at best, to import only a million tons of wheat for mixing purposes, to improve the quality. Iraqi wheat, according to a reading from the Economics Department of Baghdad Today Agency.
The ambassador's statement can be read as saying that she may have looked at the size of the cultivated area irrigated with surface water, which amounts to 1.5 million dunums, which could produce only one million tons of wheat, and this will only happen if "the groundwater dries up and no rain falls," so that the remaining area would be more. Of the 6 million dunams that are not productive, Iraq will then need to import the amount that the ambassador spoke about.
