Shafaq News/ The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, arrived this Saturday morning in the capital, Baghdad, to participate in the official memorial ceremony on the occasion of “Iraqi Martyr’s Day,” the anniversary of the assassination of Ayatollah Muhammad Baqir al-Hakim.
The President of the Region will deliver a speech during the ceremony, which will be held this morning in the office of the leader of the Wisdom Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, in the presence of presidencies, government, parliamentary and political bodies, representatives of diplomatic missions, and international organizations.
Muhammad Baqir is the son of Grand Ayatollah Mohsen al-Hakim, the great Shiite religious authority. He is also the founder of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, which is one of the Iraqi opposition forces that worked against the former Iraqi regime. He is considered one of the most prominent Shiite leaders in Iraq.
The deceased was born in 1939 AD in Najaf, and was assassinated on August 29, 2003 following the 2003 Najaf bombing after leaving the shrine of Imam Ali, where he was delivering the Friday prayer sermon. Dozens of people were killed in that bombing.
