Reviving the agricultural sector by activating food manufacturing and agricultural marketing was the focus of the economic symposium organized by the Baghdad Economic Forum, which focused on protecting plant wealth, organizing the circulation of agricultural materials and supplies in all governorates of Iraq without exception, and including agricultural projects with soft Central Bank loans, as the country has millions of dunums that can be invested. In a way that covers the needs of the local and regional market, at a time when food security is one of the basic pillars of countries’ stability and a measure of people’s well-being.
Head of the Baghdad Economic Forum, Fares Al Salman, stressed that the agricultural sector is an important axis for the stability of the country, as agricultural production represents one of the most important foundations of national security, pointing out that Iraq has millions of acres suitable for agriculture and we look forward to an agricultural revolution that employs the country’s capabilities in a direction that achieves great benefit. It is employed in a way that covers the local and regional market requirements of various agricultural crops.
He pointed out that Iraq is capable of being an important international agricultural interface due to the components it possesses, but the matter requires organization and effort that goes towards developing the reality of performance and creating integrated productive institutions in various regions of Iraq, and it is possible to benefit from international experiences within the country and employ them for the benefit of the national economy, as well as It can establish long-term agricultural investments inside Iraq and in this sector in particular, as it is inexhaustible oil, stressing the importance of protecting the national product.
Food security is one of the basic pillars of countries’ stability and a measure of people’s well-being due to its effective role in the economic, developmental and political aspects. Thus, countries are keen to provide and sustain food security for their people through their own resources first and through imports second. This is considered a weak link as it is linked to many external and internal conditions that affect its sustainability. And the ease of obtaining it.
Advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture, Mahdi Damad Al-Qaisi, stressed the inevitability of applying the laws and instructions in force to protect plant and animal wealth and regulate the circulation of agricultural materials and supplies in all governorates of Iraq without exception. Tightening supervision and control over land, sea and air border crossings for all governorates of Iraq to control commodity dumping, prevent the entry of crops, products and agricultural supplies, adhere to the import license and apply the standard to the importer, and here requires activating the supervisory role to protect the local product. The main step begins with introducing electronic governance and institutional linking between ministries and formations. concerned with this activity in all governorates.
He stressed directing investment opportunities to adopt the establishment of agricultural and industrial complexes, major stations for raising milk cows and dairy factories, and the use of agricultural cycles to expand the areas allocated for the production and manufacture of feed, pointing to the need to benefit from Arab, regional and international agricultural organizations and bodies in various areas of cooperation, most notably the transfer and localization of technology, as well as Capacity building to implement small projects or develop infrastructure and knowledge for the target group to support the private sector, women and rural youth.
Al-Qaisi pointed out that developing the agricultural sector requires supporting and encouraging the private sector and investors to establish specialized associations and companies for food processing, such as manufacturing tomato paste, jams, dairy products and their products, meat and their products, manufacturing, pressing, packing, wrapping and storing dates, manufacturing molasses, liquid sugar, medical and industrial alcohol, etc., and establishing modern refrigerated warehouses. And frozen, and attention to packaging, grading, storage, marketing and manufacturing to enhance the value chains of agricultural crops, which reflects the protection of the producer and consumer, by including them in Central Bank loans and lending from banks at low interest, provided that a rapid mechanism for lending is adopted conditional on ensuring the implementation of the project within a specific time limit for production.
He continued that in order to secure sustainable agricultural production and reduce the food gap to the lowest possible level, agricultural, animal and fish production must be increased, and the private sector must be supported and protected to enter into industries supporting the agricultural sector, such as the manufacture of chemical and organic fertilizers, chemical, environmentally friendly and biological pesticides, mechanization, agriculture, sprinkler and drip irrigation systems, agricultural nylon, packaging and homes. Plastic products, vaccines, treatments and veterinary supplies according to the latest global technologies and developments.
He pointed out that the role of agricultural marketing is important and essential in preserving the economic value of crops and agricultural products by reducing losses from the field to the consumer, which exceeds 30 percent, especially since most agricultural crops spoil quickly as a result of them containing high percentages of water in their components, such as fruits, vegetables, and fruits. Temperatures continue to rise in our country, so it becomes necessary to adopt appropriate agricultural marketing for the crop or agricultural product, both its plant and animal parts, and in all its aspects.
