Baghdad demands Tehran to open the Karun River

The Ministry of Water Resources announced that it had informed neighboring Iran of its intention to send a technical delegation to discuss the shared waters, while it demanded that its Iranian counterpart open the waters of the Karun River to improve the quality of the Shatt al-Arab water during the coming summer months to push the salt tongue away from the city of Basra. Minister Aoun Dhiyab Abdullah told “Al-Sabah”: Iran’s water contribution to the Tigris River is limited and does not exceed 18 percent, while the percentage of what comes from Turkey is 65 percent, and the rest comes from inside Iraq, represented by the Upper, Lower, and Great Zabin rivers, in addition to the Diyala River, which Its contribution became limited after Iran cut off the rivers that fed it. In the same context, he stated that Iraq informed the Iranian side of its desire to send a specialized technical delegation from the ministry to it, in order to discuss securing the country’s water shares, which came after Iran took several measures after the Hamrin area, to change some of the river courses there, warning that The Darbandikhan and Hamrin dams imports are better than in previous years, and thus the water situation of the Diyala River has become good. Abdullah revealed that Iran has cut off four important rivers that used to supply Iraq with large quantities of water. As for the rest of the rivers that currently exist, they are seasonal and include valleys that supply Iraq with torrents after rains. These are the Oil, Kalal Badra, Al-Shihabi, Al-Tayeb, and Duwayraj, pointing out that there are no large reservoirs in Iran to release Water from it except the Karun River, revealing Iraq’s demand to Iran to open the waters of the Karun River to improve the quality of the Shatt al-Arab water during the coming summer months, as it did last year after a delegation from the ministry visited it, as a contribution to pushing the salt tongue away from the city of Basra.
