    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Saturday (June 29, 2024), Representative Thaer Al-Jubouri revealed a list of 9-point incentives to bring about the biggest change in agricultural patterns.
Al-Jubouri said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "The drought challenge still exists in Iraq, despite the heavy rains in early 2024 and the recurrence of torrential waves, but the bulk of the country's strategic dams suffer from a significant water shortage compared to their absorptive capabilities."
Al-Jubouri added, “The drought crisis called for a fundamental change in agricultural patterns in the country, especially the irrigation issue,” stressing that “a list of incentives will be presented to farmers from 9 points at the beginning of next season, most notably raising crop prices and flexibility in providing them with fertilizers at subsidized prices, in addition to other advantages.” .
He pointed out that "Iraq has actually begun to re-establish modern irrigation systems by reviewing the experiences of important international companies and opening the doors to investment in this direction, and there are positive signs whose results will emerge during the past months."
The Strategic Center for Human Rights revealed on Monday (June 17, 2024) that Iraq has lost 15% of its agricultural land due to desertification and drought.
The head of the center, Fadhel Al-Gharawi, said in a statement received by "Baghdad Today", that "the area of desertified lands in Iraq is about 27 million dunums, which is approximately equivalent to 15 % of the country's area, while about 55 % of Iraq's area is considered lands threatened by desertification," indicating that "the most affected governorates are Dhi Qar, with a damage rate of 53%, while the rates in the rest of the governorates range from (1-14)%."
He added that "the United Nations classified Iraq among the five countries affected by climate change and drought, and according to a report by the International Organization for Migration, 12,212 Iraqi families were displaced due to drought in ten Iraqi governorates in central and southern Iraq," indicating that "the most affected governorates are Dhi Qar, Maysan and Diwaniyah, according to the organization, and that 76 percent of the displaced families go to urban areas."
Al-Gharawi continued, "There are natural and human factors that cause desertification in Iraq, such as the dry and hot climate, low rainfall, prevailing winds, climate change, and oil pollution."
He called on the government to "consider June 17 of each year the National Day to Combat Desertification and Drought", demanding that "afforestation be considered a national policy to combat desertification".
