The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, reiterated his affirmation that the region will remain a safe haven for all those who seek refuge in it to escape injustice and terrorism.
Barzani said in a speech during the ceremony announcing the guidelines for organizing refugee affairs in the Kurdistan Region: “For several years, the Kurdistan Region has been hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees from neighboring countries and displaced persons without any discrimination,” noting that “the Kurdistan Regional Government supports the voluntary return of all displaced persons and refugees and the normalization of conditions in their areas.”
He added, "At this stage, we were facing a difficult situation and an economic crisis, but despite that, the regional government was responsible for managing dozens of camps, and the largest proportion of the burden was placed on Kurdistan."
Barzani pointed out that "the Kurdistan Region today is home to hundreds of thousands of refugees and displaced persons who have sought refuge in the region due to the deterioration of the security situation and instability in their countries."
He continued: “We have tried, to the best of our financial capabilities, to provide basic services to refugees and displaced persons, such as schools, health insurance, and life necessities, and we hope that the federal government will be more helpful in serving refugees and displaced persons.”
