Baghdad/Al-Masala: Political and security circles in Iraq witnessed a new escalation after the airstrike launched by US forces against the Iraqi “Hezbollah Brigades” in the Jurf al-Sakhar area, in Babil Governorate. According to multiple analyses, this attack reflects American indifference to the results of the ongoing security talks with the Iraqi side, which indicates a decline in the Iraqi position in the scale of interests of the American decision-maker.

Declining US interest in Iraqi affairs

Analyses indicate that the United States is indifferent to the risks of escalating the conflict with armed factions in Iraq, which could negatively affect its security talks with the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. This disregard puts the Iraqi government in an awkward position vis-à-vis these factions, which see the American escalation as a breach of the truce and a threat to the fragile stability in the country.

Regional escalation and its impact on Iraq

The temporary truce between the armed factions and the American forces was expected to fade away due to the increasing regional escalation between the resistance front and Israel.
By carrying out this strike, Washington provoked Iraq and violated the informal truce, reflecting its disrespect for the ongoing security talks with the Iraqi government.
This move by the United States makes Al-Sudani's government appear weak and unable to protect the armed factions allied with it, which increases internal tension.

     Analysis and possible outcomes

Some analysts see a positive side to this escalation, as it may force US forces to withdraw from Iraq, especially if Donald Trump returns to the White House, who during his previous administration expressed his readiness to withdraw US forces from Syria and Iraq. This scenario could rearrange the cards in the region and weaken US influence, while giving armed factions more freedom to move.

Details of the attack and its results

The U.S. military launched an airstrike against militants in Iraq who were trying to launch drones that threatened U.S. and allied forces in the region, a U.S. defense official said. The strike, which Iraqi sources said killed at least four people, was the first by U.S. forces in Iraq since a strike in February that killed a military commander.
Observers confirm that this strike increases the complexity of the political and security scene in Iraq, where popular and political anger against American interventions is escalating.
The Popular Mobilization Forces leadership condemned the attack, stressing that “the American forces are still insisting on their hostile approach towards the sons of the Popular Mobilization Forces,” warning the State of Kuwait against “continuing to make its lands a launching pad for the American criminal approach towards our country.”
These developments are likely to lead to a gradual escalation by armed factions against Americans in Iraq, increasing the likelihood of a wider conflict in the region. This situation presents the Iraqi government with significant challenges as it attempts to balance its relations with the United States with managing internal pressures from armed factions.
