Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has agreed to send a fuel tanker to Lebanon to spare it total darkness.
Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water, Walid Fayyad, said in a statement, “We received a call from the Director General of SOMO, the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, informing us of the approval of the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, to grant permission to load the fuel tanker in solidarity with Lebanon and its people, which will enable the unloading of the two gas oil trucks at the Zahrani and Deir Ammar plants.”
He added, "This comes after a call made by Prime Minister Najib Mikati with his Iraqi counterpart, and after Minister Fayyad had made several calls with his counterpart, Iraqi Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani, the Iraqi Prime Minister's Office, the Iraqi Embassy in Lebanon, and Brigadier General Shuqair to address the fuel dues crisis and to spare Lebanon total darkness."
He added, “The oil exchange deal concluded between Lebanon and Iraq at the state level in 2021, under which Iraq is supposed to supply Lebanon with heavy black oil in exchange for transferring sums of money to a special account in Iraq at the Bank of Lebanon to finance services from Lebanon for the benefit of Iraq, was based on a relationship of trust that he built with his Iraqi counterpart and was reflected in the relationship with the Iraqi government.”
Fayyad thanked “brotherly Iraq, government and people, for bearing the consequences of the delay and negligence of the Lebanese administrations in paying the accumulated amounts,” appreciating that it is “the only country that today supports the electricity sector in Lebanon in this way.”
The Minister called on “political and media forces and figures who want to follow up on the issue to visit the ministry to review the accurate data.”
Fayyad stressed that “if the problem of securing legal cover to secure financing for Iraqi fuel shipments is not radically addressed from the Lebanese side, we will return to the same problem in the coming days and months.”
In this context, he also wished the representatives to fulfill their legislative duty with love and affection and issue the law that was transferred from the government by Decree No. 10960 since January 2023, i.e. more than a year and a half ago, so that the Central Bank of Lebanon could transfer the price of Iraqi oil, which is basically in the public finance accounts at the Central Bank of Lebanon, to Iraq’s account at the Central Bank of Lebanon, as stipulated in the agreement.
