Between Erbil and Baghdad. - Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has a new vision for managing the Kurdistan Region.
The Secretary-General of the Kurdistan National Democratic Union (YNDK), Ghafour Makhmouri, spoke about the political situation in Kurdistan, Iraq and the region, stressing that Kurdistan is constantly trying to build a friendly and balanced relationship with the countries and peoples of the region, noting that the Jordanian-Kurdish relations are very special, as the Kingdom has stood with Kurdistan in many situations.
During his hosting on the program (Zero Distance) presented by colleague Samir Al-Hayari on Noon Radio on Monday evening, Makhmouri stressed in an extensive dialogue about the situation in Kurdistan, Iraq and the region, where he shed light on the latest political developments and events and relations between Baghdad and Erbil.
“There are many efforts to ease tensions and solve problems between Erbil and Baghdad. The leader of the Kurdistan National Liberation Movement, President Masoud Barzani, visited Baghdad in the past few days and met with the Iraqi Prime Minister, the Council of Representatives, and many Iraqi political parties. As always, he expressed his readiness to do everything in his power to help solve problems and improve the political situation in Kurdistan and Iraq. Undoubtedly, there were many problems between Erbil and Baghdad and a political and diplomatic blockade was imposed on Kurdistan, but with the efforts and attempts of President Masoud Barzani and his wise policies, the problems were solved and the political and diplomatic blockade imposed on Kurdistan was broken,” Makhmouri said.
He pointed to the disputes and disputed files between Erbil and Baghdad, saying, “The most important outstanding problems between Erbil and Baghdad lie in the failure to implement Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution related to normalizing the situation in Kirkuk, Makhmour, and other areas cut off from Kurdistan, as well as the failure to send Kurdistan’s share of the Iraqi general budget and the cutting of Kurdistan’s financial dues by the Iraqi government since 2014 until now, in addition to the failure to resolve the oil and gas issue and the failure to help the Peshmerga and the Kurdish security forces. These are the files of our main problems with Baghdad, so we hold Baghdad responsible and negligent in not resolving and resolving our problems. The Kurdistan Regional Government continues its efforts to normalize relations between Erbil and Baghdad, and this stems from the desire of the Kurdistan Government, and in this regard it has fulfilled all its obligations towards the Iraqi government. For this purpose, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Mr. Masrour Barzani, has visited Baghdad several times, but unfortunately the Iraqi government has not fulfilled its promises and is still not serious about resolving the problems.”
Regarding how to manage the Kurdistan Region, Makhmouri said: “Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has a new vision for managing Kurdistan, and since the beginning of his term, he has made great efforts to institutionalize Kurdistan’s institutions and has done important work in this regard. Despite the problems that Kurdistan faces from Iraq and neighboring countries, the Kurdistan government has been able to steadfastly confront obstacles and problems and move forward.”
Within the framework of this meeting, Makhmouri highlighted Kurdistan’s relations with the countries of the region and the world, saying: “Diplomatically, Kurdistan enjoys friendly relations with the countries of the region, most Arab countries, and many countries of the world, and Kurdistan is constantly trying to build balanced and friendly relations with the countries and peoples of the region and the world.”
In another aspect of the meeting, Makhmouri touched on the relations between Jordan and Kurdistan, pointing out that “the Kurdish people always look at the Jordanian people with respect and appreciation, and that the positions of His Majesty King Abdullah II and the Jordanian government towards the Kurdish people are respected and praised.” We can say that the relations between Jordan and Kurdistan are distinctive and ideal. The relations between Jordan and Kurdistan are historical and at the highest levels, and Kurdistan wants to move forward to strengthen those relations.
He pointed out that the Jordanian government helped the Kurdistan Region, through air combat against the terrorist ISIS group, and the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II, to open a military hospital in the Kurdistan Region to treat the wounded, and until now the Jordanian medical team is in Erbil.
In another aspect of the meeting, Makhmouri highlighted the security situation and stability in Kurdistan, stressing: “The security forces (Asayish), the police, and the Peshmerga of Kurdistan have succeeded in maintaining peace and security in Kurdistan in the past and until now. The stability prevailing in Kurdistan has made other Iraqi provinces wish for it, which has turned Erbil and Kurdistan into a safe haven for the Kurds and all Iraqis.”
In the same meeting, Ghafoor Makhmouri spoke about coexistence between the components of Kurdistan, saying: “Kurdistan is an oasis of peace, brotherhood, harmony and coexistence. If we look at the coexistence between the components of Kurdistan, we find that it has become a living example in the region, which has made Kurdistan the most stable. We are proud of this Kurdish coexistence and we are trying to keep Kurdistan an oasis of coexistence as it is.” He added, “We must all work at all levels to spread the culture of mutual acceptance and deepen the spirit of brotherhood, harmony and coexistence.”
He explained that the Kurds do not have problems with other peoples, but their struggle is against governments that do not reconcile with the Kurdish people who extend across their divided homeland between Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria, and live on their land and geography, as the Kurdish land is originally independent in land and people from these countries.
He pointed out that the Kurdish struggle pushed Iraq to recognize the Kurdish land and the independent administration of their region, stressing that all that is rumored about the Israeli support for the Kurdish revolution is nothing but a lie, as the revolution relied on itself and did not take any weapons from any country, but rather the Kurdish Peshmerga forces relied on buying from Turkish and Iraqi merchants.
Regarding the Kurdish opinion on the Palestinian issue, he said that many Kurds participated in the struggle with the Palestinians and believe in the Palestinian right, as Kurdistan, Palestine and its occupation are part of the “Sykes-Picot” agreement. The Palestinian flag was raised on the Palestinian consulate building in Erbil on Kurdish lands.
Regarding the relationship between the Kurdistan Region and former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and his regime, he explained that although the Kurdish people obtained some of their rights as a result of the struggle at that time, they were greatly harmed by the regime.
