An informed source in Dhi Qar revealed on Friday that an investor in an amusement park in the city of Nasiriyah, in the center of the governorate, demolished its walls to convert it into a commercial project, while civil activists threatened to escalate their protest against their theft of the only outlet for the people of the region.
The source said, "A person who owns the last third of the city's amusement park, with the help of an armed group and in exchange for a sum of money, proceeded at dawn today to demolish the back wall of the city adjacent to the neighboring residential area, to convert it into a commercial project."
He added, "The person claims that he has a 25-year Musataha contract with the Nasiriyah Municipality that was signed more than ten years ago, and that he obtained judicial approval to invest his share in the amusement park."
The source continued, "However, the Nasiriyah Municipality had previously confirmed that it had judicial decisions in its favor against the investor," noting that "the amusement park had closed its doors several years ago for unknown reasons, which angered the residents as it was their only outlet."
Meanwhile, local civil activists in the governorate threatened, via posts on Facebook, to escalate their protest against what is happening.
They said, "The demonstrations will return again unless the Nasiriyah Municipality Directorate rebuilds the wall of the amusement park again."
Activists accused the governorate officials of “failing to protect the only outlet for the governorate’s children and selling it to suspicious parties, until they entered at dawn today with the aim of demolishing it.
