Agriculture: Iraq is capable of being the first Arab country in food manufacturing

The Ministry of Agriculture has adopted a series of effective steps and procedures to exploit the abundance of production and invest it in food manufacturing, indicating that this will be followed by a more important step related to the trend towards exporting these manufactured products abroad. While it explained that Iraq has the qualifications that qualify it to be the first Arab country in the field of food manufacturing, it indicated that it is working to establish agricultural marketing companies for the purposes of sorting, packaging and wrapping.
Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture revealed that it had taken a series of measures to support farmers and increase production yields, indicating that the measures included zeroing customs duties on farmers’ imports of modern irrigation systems, distributing seeds with support of up to 70% from higher ranks, in addition to allowing the private sector to import fertilizers through agricultural associations and agricultural offices, including urea and DAP.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Mahdi Al-Jubouri, stated in a special interview with “Al-Sabah” that there is a close relationship between agricultural production and food industries, as agricultural production is an input for food manufacturing, stressing that the ministry has adopted a strategy that ensures the provision of agricultural goods and products such as tomato paste, soybeans and sunflowers as oils in addition to date manufacturing processes.
Al-Jubouri explained that it is possible to manufacture agricultural goods and add value to these products in general by converting them from raw materials to manufactured materials and exporting the surplus, noting that there is a technical problem related to the agricultural marketing process in general and the food manufacturing process, related to the low prices during seasons of abundance compared to other countries of the world, and the reason is the abundance of supply in a period of time that depends on the age of agricultural crop production, meaning that their productive life is short.
Al-Jubouri continued that during times of "a large abundance of local agricultural products, more than the demand, there is an investment opportunity to carry out the food manufacturing process and convert these products into food products and benefit from them locally or export them abroad, as well as establish agricultural marketing companies for the purposes of packaging, sorting and wrapping." He stated that the food manufacturing process provides manufactured agricultural products to meet the country's needs locally, as importing food industries from abroad costs the country millions of dollars, while national food industries provide job opportunities and operate factories, especially the canning, dairy
and milk derivatives industries.
Al-Jubouri explained that "these industries require finding investment opportunities and for the country's governorates to participate through investment bodies and according to the specificity of each governorate in the abundance of their agricultural production, and thus we have economic integration and self-sufficiency for many of the products that the country imports from abroad," stressing the importance of the private sector's participation in the food industries and finding an integrated formula between the Ministries of Agriculture and Industry, noting that Iraq has the components that qualify it to be the first Arab country in the field of food manufacturing.
