The Capital Municipality is studying the transfer of wholesale markets outside Baghdad

Baghdad Municipality indicated that waste and violations are the biggest challenges it is currently facing, indicating that it is studying the idea of moving wholesale markets from the center of the capital to outside it.
The municipality’s spokesman, Mohammed Al-Rubaie, told Al-Sabah: “Baghdad Municipality is still proceeding correctly in establishing projects in the capital, and is challenging waste and violations, which represent the biggest challenge at the governorate level,” adding that “Baghdad suffers from overcrowding at a time when there are no large spaces, and green spaces must be preserved.”
Al-Rubaie pointed out that “population expansion is still ongoing, met with a slowdown in vertical housing and a rapid expansion of horizontal construction,” explaining that “work is ongoing on campaigns to remove violations, especially those in commercial streets, and at the same time we are seeking to find an alternative for thousands of citizens who live on what they sell in those stalls that provide them with their daily sustenance.”
The spokesman for the Baghdad Municipality said, "We are working on developing Rashid Street in a way that can show it in the best possible way, as it is a heritage street that contains many memories of Iraqis, and most of the events that took place in the country are related to it."
Regarding the wholesale markets, he explained that "the municipality is studying moving the major markets spread across Baghdad to the outskirts so that trucks can park in nearby places during unloading, and allow cart owners to transfer goods from cars to shops in a way that does not obstruct the street and pedestrians as is happening at the present time."
