    Economy News - Baghdad
Minister of Electricity Ziad Ali Fadel announced today, Monday, that energy production reached 27,400 megawatts, and while he indicated that loads increased by 20 percent this summer, he confirmed the involvement of the private sector in the campaign to resolve the bottlenecks.
“We stand here, on a land that has always embraced the great men of the nation, to lay the foundation stone for two vital projects that will illuminate the future of our holy city and our beloved country,” said Minister of Electricity Ziad Ali Fadhil in his speech during the launch of the executive works of the expansion project of the Al-Haidariya Power Plant in Najaf. “We took over the Ministry of Electricity in extremely difficult circumstances, and production was around 19,000 megawatts. Thanks to the implementation of the components of the government curriculum and the solid plans it included, we succeeded in less than two years in raising production to 27,400 megawatts, an increase of 40 percent over the previous production before our government assumed responsibility.”
“We worked on more than one axis to organize the three electricity sectors: production, transmission and distribution. For the first time, long-term maintenance contracts were concluded with international companies that manufacture our stations to ensure sound results. We also launched parallel plans in the transmission and distribution sectors,” he added, noting that “despite this qualitative leap in production, we faced challenges in the distribution sector this summer, as loads increased by 20 percent compared to last year, which created enormous pressure on the network with a significant rise in temperatures. However, with immediate directives from the Prime Minister, we were able to address the problems that arose by launching an urgent and broad campaign to resolve the bottlenecks.”
He added that "the private sector has been involved alongside the government effort in addressing the grid bottlenecks, and they are continuing in many areas of Baghdad and our dear governorates," stressing that "our government is looking for innovation and advanced means, as it has encouraged the introduction of combined cycle technology, which has a distinct economic feasibility, and contracts have actually been concluded with various international companies to provide 4,000 megawatts at the level of the country's governorates."
He continued: "Today, in this blessed spot of the holy land of Najaf, we are laying the foundation stone for the combined cycle project in the Najaf gas station with a capacity of 132 megawatts and a completion period of twenty-four months, as well as laying the foundation stone for the expansion project of the Al-Haidariyah power station, by adding a combined cycle with a capacity of 363 megawatts and a completion period of twenty-eight months."
He pointed out that "combined cycle projects represent a qualitative leap in the development of the electricity sector, as they add new electrical capacity to our national grid without the need for additional fuel, as they invest in the exhaust of the burned gas, converting it into electrical energy that supports the needs of our citizens and enhances the capabilities of our industrial sector."
He pointed out that "one of the most prominent advantages of this technology is its effective contribution to protecting the environment, as it works to reduce harmful gas emissions, making it an ideal choice in line with environmental sustainability standards. It is also characterized by high operational efficiency, as it reduces maintenance periods for production units compared to simple cycles, which ensures better continuity in energy supply. On the economic level, these projects provide many benefits to the state treasury. For example, generating 4,000 megawatts on simple cycles used to consume about one million cubic meters of imported gas per day, equivalent to about ten million dollars per day, or about three and a half billion dollars annually, which is an important financial resource that can be directed towards national development projects."
He explained that "our future vision goes beyond these achievements, as we look forward to making the most of the Iraqi gas produced locally in the provinces of Basra, Maysan, Wasit, Anbar and Diyala," noting that "this strategic direction will enable us to gradually reduce our dependence on imported gas, which will enhance energy security in our country."
He stated that "it is a source of pride that our current government, headed by Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, has achieved a historic accomplishment by being the first government to implement the combined cycle project on the ground, as we have moved beyond the theoretical planning stage to the practical implementation stage, with the allocation of the necessary financial resources to ensure the success of these vital projects."
He stressed that "the Ministry of Electricity did not stop at promises, but rather turned them into a tangible reality, and the hands of the electricity men succeeded in fulfilling the obligations of their ministry by completing the electrical connection with both Jordan and Turkey, and we look forward to completing the connection with the Gulf countries by next year to complete the link between it and the regional energy system."
He concluded by saying: “The challenges are many, but our determination is stronger and our will is firmer. Based on the saying of Imam Ali (peace be upon him): (The value of every person is what he is good at), we pledge to our people and our government to do our utmost to modernize our electrical infrastructure in record time, and build an Iraq worthy of its ancient history and great people.”
