The head of the Integrity Commission, Judge Haider Hanoun, announced on Thursday the details of the recovery of one of the most prominent defendants in the so-called “theft of the century” from Turkey in cooperation with the authorities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
Judge Hanoun said in a press conference held today, "The theft of tax deposits is an issue that will not die no matter how much the corrupt try to hide it, they will not be able to do so, and this issue is being followed up on a daily or weekly basis by the Prime Minister and the Integrity Commission."
He added, "Qasim Muhammad Muhammad was extradited from the Kurdistan Region. He is the managing director of the Humpbacked Whale Company after he had fled to Turkey. He is one of the major defendants in the tax deposit theft case," expressing his thanks to the Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, and the Minister of Interior in the region, Reber Ahmed, for their cooperation in extraditing the accused.
Judge Hanoun added that “the theft of tax deposits would not have occurred unless its managers were specialists in theft and corruption,” noting that the number of those accused of stealing tax deposits exceeded 30 defendants.
Regarding the final amount of the theft of tax deposits, the head of the Integrity Commission explained that “if we add up these amounts, it becomes more than the announced amount because the investigating judge who formed the committee reached a specific amount, but it is not accurate.”
Judge Hanoun asked the Director General of Taxes and the Minister of Finance to determine the amounts stolen from tax deposits, stressing that “they must announce them within 15 days and know the names of the companies and individuals involved in the theft. At this stage, we do not accept burying crimes in dark rooms.”
The Federal Integrity Commission announced yesterday, Wednesday, that it had received one of the most prominent defendants in the theft of tax deposits known in the media as the “theft of the century,” in cooperation between the Federal Ministry of Interior and the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Interior.
In October 2022, the “theft of the century” case was first revealed, involving former senior officials and businessmen, and sparked intense outrage in Iraq, which has witnessed widespread protests in recent years demanding an end to corruption.
The “theft of the century” became the talk of the Iraqi street, political circles, and others, until its echoes spread outside Iraq to be covered by Arab and Western media outlets.
The “theft of the century” is the disappearance of 3.7 trillion Iraqi dinars (about two and a half billion dollars) from tax trust funds, and it was revealed by several concerned parties about two months before the end of the term of the previous government headed by Mustafa Al-Kadhimi.
In mid-July (2024), Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani considered the theft of tax deposits, known as the “theft of the century,” a black spot in the history of the Iraqi state. He indicated that it was carried out with official cover, and revealed that half of its money was smuggled out of the country.
