Experts: Supporting the business environment is the first step to addressing population pressure

Supporting investment in the housing sector is an important axis for addressing population pressure in Iraq, after the country’s need reached 4 million housing units in light of the high population growth rate, which requires real support for the business environment and undermining the routine procedures that confuse the establishment of these projects and disrupt their progress.
Economic expert Hawra Al-Qassab said that the expansion in the construction of residential complexes in their horizontal and vertical forms represents the beginning of addressing the population pressure that the country has been suffering from for decades, as a result of incorrect housing policies, noting that providing an environment that encourages the establishment of housing projects represents an absolute necessity.
She explained that investing in the housing sector is a modern experience and has become desirable in the country, noting that the Iraqi citizen today wants to live in an integrated housing project that provides all means of comfort, indicating that the country's need for housing units has reached 4 million housing units.
She pointed out that the efforts of the private sector continue to implement housing projects here and there, but a large volume of work is required in all Iraqi cities without exception. Here, the Iraqi private sector can undertake the implementation of major housing projects, and the international effort can be a partner in such projects based on the existence of a large volume of work.
Economic expert Dr. Murtada Al-Khafaji confirmed that the trends that are directed towards implementing housing projects represent one of the quick solutions to address the population pressure that has negative effects on society.
He pointed out that work today is moving towards implementing residential complexes, but what is required is to expand such projects to include all governorates, to limit the aggravation of the effects of this problem, which now requires local and foreign investments. Here, it is necessary to work on providing work climates that suit what is required by global capital wishing to work in Iraq during the coming period.
He pointed out that routine complications confuse implementation and prevent projects from being completed smoothly. Here, they must be overcome by adopting new mechanisms and communications between the relevant departments must be completed within a short time.
He stressed that the national private sector, after opening up to the world, now has a lot of experience and is capable of managing and implementing projects in the best possible way, for all stages.
He stressed the necessity of expanding the creation of skilled workers in all specializations without exception to complete the work without the need to bring in international expertise that requires a lot of time and expenses.
It is worth mentioning that Iraq had qualitative expertise in this field that was known in all regions of the Middle East and not just within the country, but after the absurd wars, the workforce moved away from inheriting the professions adopted in construction and reconstruction by successive generations, which made most local companies today transfer skilled workers between the governorates and at high daily wages sometimes affecting the project budget.
Economic experts and specialists have indicated that the reality of the situation in the country shows the need to adopt low-cost residential construction to solve part of the housing crisis. This treatment requires facilitating all work and implementation procedures and removing them from the routine that confuses the work and prevents it from being implemented within the specified periods.
