    Economy News - Baghdad
The Ministry of Water Resources intends to make the most of the provisions of the framework agreement signed between Iraq and Turkey, to reach understandings aimed at preserving the marshes as a natural reserve and part of the world heritage.
Director of the Nature Iraq Organization, Jassim Al-Asadi, said in an interview with "Al-Sabah", followed by "Al-Eqtisad News", that the Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab Abdullah, chaired the nineteenth meeting of the National Committee for the Management of the Marshes as a World Heritage Property, in the presence of the concerned members from the ministries and relevant civil society organizations, noting that the minister explained that his ministry faces major challenges to secure water in a sustainable manner for the marshes, due to the limited releases that reach the country and climate change and water scarcity that is sweeping the region in general and Iraq in particular, stressing that the minister stressed the importance of making maximum use of the provisions of the framework agreement with the Turkish side, to reach understandings in order to address the infrastructure of irrigation projects that include the marshlands projects, and to preserve their environmental and ecological heritage.
Al-Asadi pointed out that the meeting discussed the measures taken and recommendations regarding the status of the water, environmental and cultural property of the marshes, and the most important projects implemented or planned to be implemented, in addition to discussing the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) project in the Basra marshes, to support the resilience of local communities to adapt to the effects of climate change and improve their livelihoods.
