    Acting Parliament Speaker Mohsen Al-Mandalawi continues to run the House of Representatives and pass laws amid the Sunni conflict over the position of president after the dismissal of Mohammed Al-Halbousi by a decision of the Federal Court on charges of forgery late last year.

    The council failed more than once to choose a new president, despite the competition being limited to Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, supported by Al-Halbousi, and Salem Al-Issawi, supported by Khamis Al-Khanjar.
    It seems that the current tension may end with political deals and bargaining over other positions, and may be linked to the local governments in Diyala and Kirkuk, despite the possibility of the Shiite house to settle matters and choose the new president despite the will of the Sunni house, which is currently witnessing a war between its parties over the highest position for the component.
    The State of Law Coalition linked the solution to other files, such as the files of Kirkuk and Diyala governorates.
    Member of the State of Law Coalition, Imran Karkoush, confirmed that resolving the issue of the Diyala and Kirkuk governments opens the way to resolving the issue of the Parliament Speaker.

    Karkoush told Al-Maalouma, "Mohsen Al-Mandalawi may continue as acting speaker of parliament until the end of the current parliamentary session and the holding of elections, especially with the continued tension within the Sunni house."
    He added, "The continuation of the House of Representatives in its current form is not in the interest of all political parties, as the Shiite House seeks to ensure that all components receive their dues."
    He said, "There are positive pressures and movements, but they have not risen to the level of resolving matters regarding the presidency of Parliament."
    However, independent politician Aid Al-Hilali warned against proceeding with the election of the Speaker of Parliament without the desire of the Sunni House, pointing out that some parties benefit from Mandalawi’s continued presence in the position for political and electoral reasons.
    Al-Hilali told Al-Maalouma, "Going in the direction of choosing a parliament speaker through arm-twisting methods and against the will of the Sunnis will have major negative effects."
    He added, "There is an urgent need to direct the compass towards pushing towards choosing one of the candidates for the position of Parliament Speaker, either Salem Al-Issawi or Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, to settle matters and end the controversy within the Sunni house."

    He pointed out that "some parties may seek to keep Mohsen Al-Mandlawi in office to be a qualitative opponent of Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani in the upcoming elections, especially since Al-Mandlawi has taken steps to create a popular base and achieved some successes during his time in office."
    Member of the Sovereignty Alliance, Ahmed Al-Dulaimi, confirmed today, Wednesday, the widening gap of differences between 4 Sunni alliances and the Progress Party regarding passing the election of a parliament speaker during the next session. 
    Al-Dulaimi said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency that "major differences arose between the Azm, Al-Hasm, Al-Siyada and Al-Mubadara alliances and the Progress Party, led by the dismissed Mohammed Al-Halbousi, due to the latter's involvement in spreading division, chaos and problems among the Sunni alliances."
    He added, "The Sunni alliances rejected Halbousi's proposals to resolve the crisis of electing a parliament speaker, as they do not meet the level of ambition and serve the interests of progress."
    He added, "Deep differences emerged between the Sunni alliances and the Progress Party led by Halbousi, which increased Sunni divisions." End 25
