The Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee revealed, today, Thursday, a "shocking" scandal related to the explosion of the gas pipeline from the Central Oil Company, which led to endangering the lives of citizens and causing "serious" damage to the infrastructure.

Committee member Alaa Al-Haidari said in an interview with Sumarya News, “The disaster that occurred in the explosion of the gas pipeline from the Central Oil Company was not just an accident, but rather the result of collusion and blatant negligence by some officials in the Central Oil Company.”

According to Al-Haidari, the story “began when the Director General of the Central Oil Company, in an irresponsible move, decided to operate the gas compressors without ensuring their readiness or following the required safety procedures, ignoring the advice of the engineering cadres, in a move believed to have been made to display a fictitious achievement before the Minister of Oil during his visit to the company,” noting that “instead of achieving a political gain, this move led to a real disaster.”

He explained that "the results of this incident were a huge fire and the widespread spread of gas in residential areas, which led to terrorizing citizens and causing multiple cases of poisoning."

“Initial investigations revealed a complete lack of internal coordination, which caused the pressure on the pipeline to increase far beyond its design capacity,” he added, noting that “what is most surprising is that the pipeline had been abandoned for a long time, with gas being pumped without approval and without signing a transfer agreement with the oil pipeline company.”

“The transmission line was designed to withstand a maximum operating pressure of only 22 bars, and despite the line having been previously inspected and the inability of the Central Oil Company to process the gas from impurities and liquids, which could cause damage that could shut down the Taji station, the Central Oil Company exceeded this limit without any regard for public safety,” he added, noting that “the goal was to achieve a false accomplishment that could be presented to the minister, but the result was a devastating explosion that resulted in massive property losses and significant human losses.”

He stressed that "this incident reveals a horrific level of corruption and negligence, which has put people's lives at risk and caused serious damage to the infrastructure," calling for "those responsible for this disaster to be held strictly accountable, as this act cannot go unpunished."

He added, "An investigative committee will be formed by members of the Oil and Gas Committee, and those who tamper with the oil wealth will be held accountable and referred to the Iraqi judiciary to receive their just punishment for this irresponsible behavior.
