The Parliamentary Committee for Women and Children revealed, today, Tuesday, a movement to develop plans and programs for qualifying courses for those who are about to get married in Iraq, where these courses are mandatory for a period of one month, with the granting of a certificate that qualifies them to complete the marriage procedures.

Committee Chairwoman Dunya Al-Shammari said, “The proposal came during the committee’s previous meeting with the Supreme Council for Women, where the need to establish a ‘Family Foundation’ was emphasized, which aims to educate families about their rights and duties, in light of the current lack of awareness among newlyweds.”

“Today, we see that many newlyweds lack the necessary culture to manage their marital life properly,” she added, noting that “we have proposed organizing educational courses for married couples before marriage, and these courses will likely include the topic of domestic violence. These courses will be mandatory, and participants will have to obtain a certificate that qualifies them to complete the marriage procedures before a judge. The course is scheduled to last for a month, and will not include previously married couples.”

She pointed out that “the committee is in the process of developing detailed plans and programs to implement these courses,” stressing that “the goal of this initiative is to preserve the family institution, which is considered one of the most important institutions in society,” according to Al-Sabah newspaper.

Al-Shammari explained that “the committee aspires through these courses to enhance acquaintance and cooperation between spouses, and to discuss ideas openly. If this proposal becomes legal, it will be mandatory for everyone.”
