    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
About six months ago, a young girl living in the slums east of the capital, Baghdad, attempted suicide by taking rat poison, but she was saved at the last moment after being transferred to the emergency room of a nearby hospital.
Abu Muhammad, a relative of this girl, says that there are two reasons that push the poor to commit suicide: the first is poverty and the second is family problems. He confirms that “even when attempting suicide, they look for a means that expresses their poverty,” referring to the cheap price of “rat poison.”
He added in an interview with Baghdad Today, "I feel pain for my relative who was forced by poverty to leave school early," noting that "suicide has become an epidemic in poor neighborhoods."
Ilham Kadouri, head of an organization concerned with widows and the poor, pointed out that “suicide through rat poison has increased in several governorates and painful incidents have been recorded recently. Suicide in general is a phenomenon that prevails in the governorates and it is increasing year after year, and 70% of its victims are 30 years old and under.”
She added, "The use of rat poison as a means of suicide comes because it is the least heinous of other means of suicide and can be easily obtained, but what brings suicides together is extreme poverty."
In her interview with Baghdad Today, she admitted that “there is clear governmental neglect of the suicide file in Iraq, and hardly a day goes by without a family being struck by the tragedy of one of its members committing suicide, especially young people and teenagers, for several reasons, the highest percentage of which is poverty and family problems.”
Akram Qais, a psychologist, believes that “suicide has several causes, some of which are related to poor financial conditions, others to the pressure of family problems, and there are other causes related to work.”
He added in an interview with Baghdad Today, "Many people could be saved if society became more open to the issue of psychological treatment and that it is not a defect, noting that" the high suicide rates indicate the existence of a crisis that must be paid attention to and its causes must be explained and research centers that study the phenomenon and provide objective solutions to avoid losing more lives must be supported."
