Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's choice of Iraq as his first foreign stop yesterday, Wednesday, was not, as some think, due to the good relations between the two countries only, but rather to the importance of Baghdad and Tehran in the region and two elements of its security and stability, on the one hand, but the other aspect is what has been achieved in Iraq itself since Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani assumed the presidency of the government, as the country now enjoys a high degree of security and its economy is moving steadily forward, in addition to the success of diplomacy and its active role
in the region.
Yesterday, Wednesday, the government palace in Baghdad witnessed the signing ceremony of 14 bilateral memoranda of understanding in various fields, which will draw a new roadmap between the two countries, as Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and the Iranian President sponsored the signing ceremony.
During a joint press conference in Baghdad, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and the Iranian President stressed the depth of the historical and cultural ties that unite the two neighboring peoples and countries, and the possibility of developing cooperation mechanisms between Baghdad and Tehran into a comprehensive strategic bilateral partnership.
Al-Sudani pointed out that Iraqi-Iranian relations are distinguished by their high level, indicating that "this historical neighborhood can be translated into the highest levels of cooperation and partnership, and bilateral work for the interests of our two peoples, and helps to confront current challenges, and support stability."
For his part, the President of the Republic said during his talks with his Iranian counterpart: "Iraq strongly supports strengthening joint cooperation and the necessity of activating the provisions of the agreements and memoranda of understanding signed between the two countries."
