After more than two decades of a complete halt to the military industry in Iraq, the Military Industrialization Authority launched, on Wednesday, for the first time, the manufacture of drones.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Interior and the Security Media Cell, Brigadier General Muqdad Miri, said in a statement, “This move came in order to support the Border Forces Command with modern technologies, as a test of a reconnaissance drone was conducted today in the presence of the Commander of the Border Forces, the Head of the Military Industrialization Authority, and a number of specialists in the Ministry of Interior and the Authority.”
Merry added, "The plane's range and capabilities for monitoring, surveillance and reconnaissance were tested," noting that the purpose of this was "to equip the Border Forces Command with it to raise its combat capabilities and readiness to protect the Iraqi borders."
Drones are considered one of the modern lethal defensive and offensive weapons that have witnessed a significant increase in production by many countries due to their strategic importance in defensive and offensive wars and battles, as well as reconnaissance and espionage operations. The United Nations even called earlier for the need to establish controls and rules for the use of drones.
Since 2003, Iraq has been completely dependent on imports for its security needs, and even agricultural and other areas, due to the decisions of the civil governor of Iraq, Paul Bremer, who dissolved the Military Industrialization Authority, which was formed in the late 1980s and produced many military needs, including light weapons (pistols) and various types of ammunition. It also developed limited types of missiles, air defense weapons, and cannons.
But after the recovery and relative stability after 2003, successive governments moved towards gradually revitalizing these factories, where the “Babel” pistol and other military tools were manufactured.
On July 21, 2024, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, inaugurated a number of factories and laboratories for the production of light equipment and mortar shells during a visit he made to the Military Industrialization Authority in the capital, Baghdad.
The Military Industrialization Authority had previously announced the production of the 22mm “Challenge” cannon, after the production of the “Babylon” pistol, which is similar to the previous “Tariq” pistol.
