    Economy News - Baghdad
[rtl]The Parliamentary Education Committee stressed the need to keep the food basket for the school feeding project for the current academic year.[/rtl]
[rtl]Committee member Najwa Kakai said in an interview with the official newspaper that “school nutrition is one of the most prominent projects that the committee is following up with specialists in the Ministry of Education, and it is an important supporter of the educational process, revealing the committee members’ persistent efforts to ensure that the food basket for each student includes no less than five items.”[/rtl]
[rtl]She explained that "the project contributes to enhancing the intellectual and mental capabilities of the student, as every school included in the project is located in areas below the poverty line according to the statistics of the Ministry of Planning in this regard, revealing the endeavor to include new areas in the school feeding project, but that requires special approvals regarding additional financial liquidity."[/rtl]
[rtl]Kakai pointed out that "the committee stresses the necessity of preparing the food basket for the school feeding project, locally and not imported, to encourage national industry, with the necessity of preparing it for them by local hands attracted from the unemployed, which contributes to solving part of the unemployment crisis among young people."[/rtl]
[rtl]For his part, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Education, Karim Al-Sayed, said in a statement to the official media, followed by (Al-Mada), that "the school feeding project targets the poorest governorates and districts according to the data of the Ministry of Planning," indicating that "the project included more than 2,500 schools, and about 800 thousand students in all of Iraq's governorates last year."[/rtl]
[rtl]Mr. Al-Sayed added, "This project has very great benefits, and this is the first time it has been implemented by the Ministry of Education alone, as it was previously implemented by international organizations and others."[/rtl]
[rtl]He pointed out that "the project is important as it contributes fundamentally to reducing dropout rates, supports the health and physical structure of students, and also supports the family."[/rtl]
[rtl]He continued, "The school feeding project includes all governorates. In each governorate there is a district. For example, in Baghdad we have the Abu Ghraib area and Sadr City, in Nineveh we have Al-Baaj, in Dhi Qar Al-Jubaish, and in Muthanna Al-Khidr, and so on. There is a district in each governorate defined by a group of schools included in the school feeding."[/rtl]
[rtl]Commentators on social media and Iraqi platforms see the project as a major contribution to motivating students from low-income families to commit to their studies. This is especially important because of the high dropout rates among many of these students, as their families cannot afford their education. As a result, the student may go without food during long school hours, due to the limited resources of his family.[/rtl]
