    Baghdad:
Iraq and the United Nations signed a document for the peace and stability project in Sinjar, at a financial cost of three million dollars.
The Ministry of Planning said in a statement today: The project was sponsored by it and funded by the United Nations, and implemented by three UN agencies, namely the United Nations Development Program, the International Organization for Migration, and the United Nations Women's Organization.
The statement explained that this project supports stability in Sinjar and achieving sustainability in the fields of training and development, adding that the project cost (3) million dollars, and includes infrastructure components, components related to training and social cohesion, and achieving stability in Sinjar.
According to the statement, this part of the support is provided by the United Nations in Iraq in light of the crises and the current circumstances, which the government is working on, for the purpose of rebuilding Sinjar and the areas liberated as a result of the terrorist ISIS gangs and their impact on Iraq.
The statement added that the project was signed on the Iraqi side by Nineveh Governor Abdul Qader Al-Dakhil, and on the United Nations side by the UNDP Representative in Iraq Auke Lootsma, in the presence of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Planning for Technical Affairs Maher Hammad Johan, and the Director General of the International Cooperation Department Saher Abdul Kadhim.
On August 3, 2014, ISIS elements attacked Sinjar district, west of Nineveh province, killing and wounding a large number of Yazidis, in addition to displacing them and destroying their areas.
This is despite the kidnapping of thousands of others, most of whom are Yazidi women and children, the fate of many of whom remains unknown. There are about 300,000 Yazidis in displacement camps, most of them in the Kurdistan Region, while only more than 20,000 families have returned to Sinjar district, which is mostly followers of this sect, after it was liberated from ISIS.
In mid-2014, the extremist organization overran vast areas and cities estimated at a third of Iraq's area before Iraqi forces, backed by the US-led international coalition, were able to retake them from the extremist organization in a three-year military operation.
It is noteworthy that Baghdad and Erbil had reached an agreement on October 9, 2020, to normalize the situation in Sinjar, stipulating that the district would be jointly administered in administrative, security and service aspects, but this agreement has not yet entered into actual implementation for political reasons, according to officials in the Kurdistan Region.[/size]
