Economic researcher Diaa Al-Mohsen confirmed that the continued burning of gas costs the state billions of dollars.
Al-Mohsen said, “The Ministry of Oil is using the security situation as an excuse, on the one hand, and the lack of necessary funding, on the other hand,” adding, “But these justifications are powerless in the face of the profits that the ministry distributes to its employees, which exceed billions of dollars annually.”
He added, "Burning the gas associated with oil production costs the state billions of dollars," stressing "the need to establish giant oil refineries that refine oil in the largest quantities produced by Iraq instead of exporting crude oil."
The economic researcher pointed out that “there are political influences, and they are present in every economic file, not just in the oil file, because the political parties and blocs have economies through which they control the projects that the ministries present to the contractors. These economies finance the parties to which they belong in various ways, and in a way that does not arouse suspicion about this party or that, but they also speak in the names of these parties among themselves.”
Iraq had signed 4 contracts with the French energy company TotalEnergies in July 2023, worth $27 billion, in an effort to boost oil production and invest in associated gas, which will provide the country with about 300 million standard cubic feet of gas, in addition to producing about a thousand megawatts of electricity through renewable solar energy.
The Iraqi government continues its efforts to end the issue of flaring gas associated with oil production operations. Observers describe the efforts as extremely important to reduce environmental pollution and to reduce the import of foreign gas by an estimated 50% over the next few years.
