The Ministry of Environment confirmed the existence of international support and financial allocations to reduce pollution in river water and develop sewage treatment plants.
“Water treatment in sewage treatment plants requires four processes: mechanical, biological, chemical and filtration. Part of that water is discharged into rivers without complete treatment, as the process is limited to mechanical treatment by separating heavy water from the water and then sedimentation, which is considered a very simple thing compared to other processes,” said Najla Mohsen Al-Waili, Director General of the Technical Department at the Ministry of Environment, in a statement.
She added, “In Baghdad, there are the northern and southern Rustumiyah stations, and the two stations are outdated and require additional projects, as they were designed to treat the sewage water of 4 million citizens, while the number of Baghdad’s citizens is currently approaching 10 million.”
Al-Waili pointed out that “several measures have been taken to control pollution in the rivers, including counting the number of activities that pollute the Tigris River through periodic monitoring reports,” noting that “the government is very interested in this issue and there are special committees in the Advisory Board of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, and there are periodic meetings with the relevant authorities and there is actual work to develop treatment plants or link them to other secondary treatment plants to raise their efficiency.”
“New ideas have been put forward, including using this water after filtering it in afforestation campaigns and green belts to purify the atmosphere and get rid of the amounts of pollution in it,” she continued, noting that “there are ongoing procedures and monitoring and permanent meetings with government agencies as well as with the main authority in the municipalities and the Baghdad Sewerage Directorate, and even with international organizations such as UNICEF, which supports this issue and is concerned with the issue of river water pollution due to its significant impact on the quality of drinking water. The government is applying strict laws to deter cases of pollution and hold those responsible accountable, and treatments are ongoing. It is expected that the pollution file due to sewage water will be closed by the end of 2025.”
