Report..
The issue of choosing the Speaker of Parliament seems to have entered a new phase of political complexity, as we witness unexpected changes at the last minute. After the issue of the position of the Speaker of Parliament had been neglected for several months, it suddenly returned to the forefront with the intervention of the Coordination Framework, which seemed to have decided to resolve the issue quickly, overcoming the internal divisions that were hindering agreement on a single figure to assume the position.
Recent events indicate that the Coordination Framework and some Sunni blocs, after rounds of negotiations and political pressure, decided to rally around the name of Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, the former Speaker of Parliament, to be the expected alternative to the dismissed Mohammed Al-Halbousi.
Despite these developments, it seems that support for Al-Mashhadani did not come without political sacrifices from the parties of the Coordination Framework itself. Information indicates that the leaders of the framework, and unified their vision around one figure to resolve this issue completely.
Speaking about this file, MP Mohammed Al-Baldawi confirmed that the Sunni blocs have not yet agreed on a specific person to obtain the position of Parliament Speaker, while he revealed the reason for not including the paragraph on electing the Speaker of the Council in tomorrow’s session.
Al-Baldawi said in a statement, “The political components within the Sunni component have not yet agreed on a specific figure, and this has led to the paragraph on electing the Speaker of the House of Representatives not being included in tomorrow’s session,” indicating that “despite the Sunni component’s claims that they are demanding a resolution to this issue, they refuse to reach an agreement.”
He added, “The pressure of the framework and its push to resolve this issue made the Sunni blocs issue several statements refusing to attend the session to elect the president if it was set without prior agreement on a specific figure,” noting that “the ball is now in the court of the Sunni blocs and the Coordination Framework supports resolving this issue.”
