Fear not: there is hope for the Bears

As another week and another loss hit the record books, Chicago Bears fans need good news. Anything to help wash down the enormous pill that the 2016 season has been to this point is fantastic. A week of preparation and hard-nosed play have again been negated by critical mistakes and sheer bad luck. The good news though, is that the Bears were within range of upsetting the Lions with what was basically their second-string unit.
Perhaps this is not the breaking news that would cure ailing fans, but there is light at the end of this tunnel. The Bears put up a good fight in every game they play in. Take away a few less bad calls, failed late possessions or silly “rookie mistakes”, and their record wouldn’t be all that bad. I still see this as a blessing in disguise.

Despite their 3-10 record, the young talent that the Bears are developing looks very promising. There is a lot of homegrown talent that will be headlining this young squad for years to come. Remember: the Bears’ roster was one of the oldest in the NFL. Former general manager Phil Emery had three drafts before they canned him. Out of his first two years (2012 and 2013), only three players remain on the roster: Kyle Long, Alshon Jeffery and Marquess Wilson. Current GM Ryan Pace has been around for two years, and he has been doing a lot better at drafting than Emery did. His list of players that have seen playing time and have succeeded is quite extensive. Although there are rumors of a big-name GM coming to Chicago, I am a firm believer in Ryan Pace. These are some of the players that Pace has added so far.

There are some NUGGETS amongst that group, and all of them are Pace acquisitions. If anything, it is a benefit that these players have been tossed aside by other teams. These next few games may prove to be valuable for these rookies, as they will serve as opportunities for playing time and experience.
With another losing season, thankfully, comes a high draft pick. The Bears have a young-gun GM who is particularly good at doing that. The results on the field don’t match up with the team’s record, as those who follow the team can attest to. Their being 3-10 is a result of all else sans a lack of talent. The logistics of the job Pace has done is admirable. His gamble on Matt Barkley is paying off dividends. Barkley has shown poise and accuracy in these past few games. So much, in fact, that drafting a quarterback in the first round isn’t an obligation or a given; but that is a topic for another time.

So you see, there are good things ahead for the Bears. Let’s not forget the deep pockets the Bears will be sporting this offseason – their cap space will only increase heading into free agency. As far as optimism goes, count me in as a predicator for Ryan Pace.
