Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in an exclusive interview with AFP in Damascus that the chemical attack on the northwestern city of Khan Sheikhan was "fabricated" to use as a pretext to justify the US strike on an air base.
"As far as we're concerned, it's 100 percent," Assad said in the first interview after the chemical attack on Khan Sheikhan and the US strike.
"Our impression is that the West and the United States are mainly complicit with the terrorists, and they have fabricated the entire story so that they have a pretext to launch an attack" on the air cap base in Homs, central Syria.
"Since the strike, we have not stopped attacking terrorists throughout Syria," the Syrian president said. "Our firepower and our ability to attack terrorists were not affected by this strike."
Assad said he could allow an international inquiry into the chemical attack on Khan Shiqun, provided it was "impartial" to avoid politicizing it by its opponents.
"We have discussed with the Russians, in the last few days after the strike, that we will work with them to conduct an international investigation, but this investigation should be fair," he said.
"We can only allow an investigation when it is unbiased, and when we make sure that neutral countries will participate in this investigation, to ensure that it will not be used for political purposes," he said.
The Syrian president reiterated that Syria had no chemical weapons since the destruction of its arsenal in 2013 after the United States and Western countries accused Damascus of launching a chemical attack in the eastern region of Ghouta.
"We do not have any chemical weapons," Assad said. "In 2013 we gave up all our arsenal ... Even if we had such weapons, we would not have used them."
The Syrian president said the United States was "not serious" in reaching a political solution to end the bloody conflict in the country for more than six years.
"The United States is not serious about reaching any political solution," he said. "They want to use the operation as a cover for terrorists."
