The United States has launched an official investigation into US IP practices in China.
"His office has decided that these critical issues deserve a thorough investigation," said Robert Laitzer, the US trade representative.
The move comes after US President Donald Trump asked Laitzer to consider Chinese practices that could harm intellectual property rights and US technological development.
China expressed "grave concern" about the investigations, which could lead to US trade sanctions.
"The United States has been concerned about these issues for some time," said Gary Hapbauer of the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington.
The US annual loss of counterfeit goods, pirated software and stealing trade secrets is estimated at about US $ 600 billion.
