The United States has launched an official investigation into US IP practices in China.
"His office has decided that these critical issues deserve a thorough investigation," said Robert Laitzer, the US trade representative.
The move comes after US President Donald Trump asked Laitzer to consider Chinese practices that could harm intellectual property rights and US technological development.
China expressed "grave concern" about the investigations, which could lead to US trade sanctions.
"The United States has been concerned about these issues for some time," said Gary Hapbauer of the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington.
The US annual loss of counterfeit goods, pirated software and stealing trade secrets is estimated at about US $ 600 billion.
The United States said it was considering piracy and reports that the Chinese government was investing in US companies in key industries as a way to access modern technology.
Officials will gather comments for a hearing in October as part of the so-called investigation into section 301.
    What could happen next?
"The United States will find evidence of unfair practices, but it is not clear how Trump will deal with them," he said.
China may file a complaint with the World Trade Organization or decide to take individual action, he added.
"Sanctions may target individual or larger companies, which will shape China's reaction.
