    [ltr]The Italian Coast Guard said it had rescued about 1,400 migrants from overcrowded boats off the coast of Libya while two bodies had been recovered.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Italian Coast Guard vessels, financial police, the EU anti-smuggling operation known as Sofia and ships operated by humanitarian groups participated in 11 rescue operations, according to a statement.[/ltr]
    [ltr]There were no details on the nationalities of those rescued and no information was available on the bodies.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Although hundreds of thousands of migrants arrived in Europe via Italy after embarking on boats from North Africa over the past four years, it is unusual to save that number in one day during the winter when the seas are raging.[/ltr]
    [ltr]The Interior Ministry said before the rescue operations that 974 immigrants arrived in Italy by sea so far this year compared to about 2393 during the same period last year.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Immigration is one of the hot issues in Italy ahead of the March 4 general elections. The ruling Democratic Party has pointed to a sharp decline in the number of arrivals from Libya since July as evidence that it is now able to deal with what seemed to be an endless flow of immigrant boats.[/ltr]
    [ltr]The number of expatriates fell by a third last year to 119,000 from a year earlier and a two-thirds decline in the second half of the year.[/ltr]
    [ltr]The drop comes after an agreement reached with the Tripoli government in February, whereby Libyans receive aid and training to combat human traffickers and reinforce the Libyan Coast Guard.[/ltr]
