Tillerson is like Russia and China in colonial countries
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced that the increasing presence of Russia and China in Latin America is hampering his country.
"Russia continues to sell arms and military equipment to unfriendly regimes that do not respect democratic values," the minister said in a speech at the University of Texas.
Tillerson pointed out that Washington can not remain indifferent to the situation, "and will defend its interests against distant states" that do not conform to US policy.
The US Secretary of State said that China's influence is also growing in Latin America. He compared Beijing's policy with the policy of colonial powers. "Latin America does not need a new empire that seeks only its people," he said.
The minister believes that the projects implemented by the Chinese in Latin America can not bring interest. He stressed that Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru are now in the orbit of China.
The comments come ahead of the start of his tour to Latin American countries. Tilerson will visit Argentina on Feb. 3, Peru on Feb. 5 and Colombia the next day to conclude his tour on Feb. 7 in Jamaica.
In an article published at the end of last December, Rex Tillerson declared that he had no illusions about Russia, but felt it necessary to establish relations with them.
