Trump supports the killing of drug traffickers like Duterti does in the Philippines
US President Donald Trump has praised the effectiveness of the death penalty in deterring drug traffickers, saying that countries that have done so have done well in fighting the scourge that kills 200 people a day in the United States.
"Drug traffickers and drug traffickers are really damaging," Trump said at a conference on drug control in the United States.
"Some countries apply very harsh penalties, the death penalty ... and the idea that these countries have problems with drugs is less than we have," he said.
Trump hailed the iron fist policy of his Philippine counterpart Rodrigo Duterti in the fight against drug traffickers in his country, although his "war on drugs" has been sharply criticized by human rights groups.
Duterti was elected following an election program in which he pledged to eradicate drugs and corruption in the country of 100 million people. On 30 June 2016, Duterti received the verdict, and since then more than thousands of people, mostly drug addicts and drug addicts, have been killed in police operations and killings by members of civil security committees.
"We need to be firm with drug traffickers ... We have to be very strict in sanctions," he said.
"If you shoot someone, you are sentenced to life imprisonment, you are sentenced to death, these people can kill two or three thousand people and nothing happens to them," Trump said.
