[rtl]Sumer News: IOM appealed for immediate international funding to help displaced people and returnees in Iraq.[/rtl]
[rtl]"Immediate support is needed as Iraqis throughout the country continue to be affected by the remnants of the recent conflict," said Girard White, head of the organization's mission in Iraq. "The required funding is necessary to continue to provide humanitarian assistance to displaced people and to support returnees to restore community, health and housing infrastructure so that they can rebuild their lives," he added.[/rtl]
[rtl]"More than half of IOM appeals in Iraq are for the purpose of assisting displaced persons and returnees by providing seasonal shelter and non-food items," he said.[/rtl]
[rtl]Appeals include support for camp management and coordination, psychosocial support, emergency health care and livelihoods in recovering areas, as well as the achievements of the displacement tracking matrix.[/rtl]
[rtl]The IOM appeal for $ 26.7 million highlights the urgent needs of more than 700,000 Iraqi returnees, members of host communities and displaced people throughout the country, especially those still in camps or informal locations, as well as those who may be displaced once a second.[/rtl]
[rtl]The IOM appeal is in line with the UN plan for humanitarian response in Iraq, which began in Baghdad and the Iraqi government's 2018 plan for relief, sheltering and stabilizing displaced people.[/rtl]
[rtl]According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) since the beginning of the conflict in January 2014, 3.5 million people have returned to their areas, while more than 2.3 million people remain displaced.[/rtl]
[rtl]Of the displaced, more than 631,000 live in the camps, and some 260,000 live in critical accommodation arrangements such as informal settlements, unfinished buildings, religious buildings and schools.[/rtl]
