BAGHDAD - A member of the Committee on Agriculture, Water and Marshlands Mohammad Sihud warned on Tuesday of a real crisis in the agricultural sector over the next six months due to the water crisis, while the former ministers of water resources blamed the country.
"We expect a real crisis will be faced by the agricultural sector over the next six months due to the lack of water imports entering Iraq because of the filling of the Turkish Alesso dam," Chihod told Iraq News.
"The five ministers of water resources who have been running the ministry since 2003 are responsible for the current crisis because of the absence of water plans and policies at the external and internal levels.
"Former ministers were supposed to start building dams, reservoirs and desalination plants and use groundwater to support the agricultural sector and to provide safe drinking water," he said.
"There was also supposed to be a supreme water committee headed by the prime minister negotiating with Erdogan because this file is in the hands of the latter.
The Ministry of Water Resources has received five ministers since 2003, namely Mohammad Dhari Jassim (temporary minister of irrigation), the Ministry of Agriculture in 2003, Abdul Latif Jamal Rasheed (2003-2011) and Muhannad Salman Al-Saadi, 2014) and Mohsen al-Shammari, who belongs to the Sadrist movement from (2014-2016) Hassan al-Janabi, minister of the candidate candidate of the Sadrist movement (2016 - so far).
The country is suffering a water crisis as a result of the lack of water imports entering Iraqi territory, especially after Turkey's filling of the Alesso dam on June 1.
The Iraqi parliament had hosted the Minister of Water Resources Hassan al-Janabi and a number of ministers yesterday to discuss the water crisis, which worsened after the entry of the Turkish Alisso Dam to service on June 1. "
