[ltr]Germany and France on Sunday sharply criticized US President Donald H. Trump's decision to withdraw his support for the G7 statement abruptly and accused him of destroying confidence and acting in an inconsistent manner.[/ltr]
[ltr]After Trump left the G7 summit in Canada before its end, his Twitter announcement caused the withdrawal from the final statement to break what appeared to be a fragile consensus on the trade dispute between Washington and its major allies.[/ltr]
[ltr]Germany and France, members of the G7, said they supported the final statement despite Trump's decision.[/ltr]
[ltr]"In a matter of seconds, you can destroy trust through 280 characters on Twitter," German Foreign Minister Haiku Mas said when asked about the sudden change in Trump's position, adding that it would take much longer to rebuild lost confidence.[/ltr]
[ltr]A French presidential official said France and Europe supported the G7 communique, noting that anyone abandoning commitments made at the summit would show its "confusion and contradiction."[/ltr]
[ltr]"International cooperation can not stop on anger or sound clips, let's be serious," the official said.[/ltr]
[ltr]A spokesman for the German government said Berlin still supported the G7 final statement despite Trump's decision.[/ltr]
[ltr]"Germany supports the agreed final communique," spokesman Steffen Zeibert said in a statement.[/ltr]
