South Korean President John Jong-un said on Thursday that the world had escaped the threat of war after a meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un this week in Singapore, echoing the same tone of optimism expressed by Trump.
After the summit, Trump and Kim issued a joint statement confirming North Korea's commitment to "work towards full denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" and ending the joint US-South Korean military exercises and providing US security guarantees to North Korea.
"There are many analyzes regarding the outcome of the summit, but I think the most important thing is that the people of the world, including the American, Japanese and Korean people, have all escaped the threat of war, nuclear weapons and missiles," Moon told US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo before a meeting in Seoul.
"I am sure we have taken an important and very good step in Singapore," he told South Korean President Kim Kyung-hwa and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono.
The US secretary said after the meeting that North Korea had committed itself to abandon its nuclear arsenal, but said it would not be easy.
Pompeo said the North Korean leader realized that his nuclear arsenal had to be phased out quickly and that UN sanctions would only be relaxed after "full nuclear disarmament". Ending / 25
