US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, may reach a formal trade agreement at a summit on March 27 in the light of the progress of the talks, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The two countries exchanged billions of dollars in commodity tariffs for the other country, sparking financial market shocks, disrupting factory supply chains and reducing US farm exports.
China will reduce tariffs on US-made goods, including agricultural products, chemicals and automobiles, in exchange for easing measures taken by Washington, the newspaper said, citing sources familiar with the matter from both sides.
But the newspaper sources warned of obstacles still exist, and said both sides would face internal resistance that conditions favor the other party.
The report said the agreement would include the purchase of natural gas worth 18 billion dollars from the US Shener Energy.
A Houston-based spokesman declined to comment on the possibility of a new deal to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to China. Last year, the company signed a 20-year agreement to supply LNG to LNG from its export port in Louisiana until 2043.
US Treasury Secretary Stephen Menuchin told CNPC on Thursday that the United States was working on a detailed trade agreement with China that would include specific structural commitments.
Last week, Trump said the United States would withdraw from any trade deal with China if it was not good enough, while his economic advisers were talking about "remarkable" progress toward an agreement to end the conflict with Beijing.

The United States and China are about to reach an agreement to end the standoff initiated by US President Donald Trump last year and have angered Beijing for imposing additional tariffs on Chinese imported goods, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
The paper quoted unnamed sources as saying that negotiations between the two sides have witnessed remarkable progress and that there is an agreement on the horizon. The Wall Street Journal pointed out that Beijing is more likely to cut tariffs and lift other restrictions on agricultural and chemical imports and US vehicles.
China could also increase its purchases of US products, including natural gas from the Shinner Energy Group.
Washington is also ready to make concessions. The Wall Street Journal said US authorities were not opposed to canceling most of the sanctions imposed on Chinese products last year.
But there are still obstacles, although it is not unlikely that an agreement will be announced at a March 27 meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Finished
