An Iraqi Observatory calls for participation in writing a law to hold accountable those involved in killing and kidnapping activists

The Iraqi Promise Observatory launched a workshop to write a draft of the accountability law for political and military leaders involved in acts of repression, violence, sectarian and inflammatory rhetoric, and systematic killing.
The aforementioned observatory said, in a statement received by Al-Mada, that “600 days have passed since the start of the repression, assassinations and the liquidation of media professionals and activists, and among the most recent of these crimes is the liquidation of the head of the Coordination of Civil Movement in Karbala, Ihab Al-Wazni.
He added, "The investigation is still in place, and had it not been for the courage of some opinion-makers, the media, and investigative investigations, we would not have reached a part of the hidden truth about those involved in killing and looting the blood of young people in the squares, which proves and shows the involvement of the political system and the conspiracy of investigators and local governments to prevent the achievement of justice."
He said, "It has been 20 months since the political interference to cover and hide the killers, acquit their files and the absence of evidence, from surveillance cameras and live confessions, and change the course of investigations, for witnesses who have proven their involvement in the killing, so that the brazenness of the government and the system has reached the point of disavowing all the pledges made by it to reveal the killers of the demonstrators." Ignoring the demands of the protest movement, ”according to the statement.
He pointed out that "for months and days, politicians have mastered evading the truth and hiding behind lobbies and policies to justify the actions of the killers who were involved in committing them, releasing all charges against the martyrs of the young actors, influencers and participants in October."
The Observatory indicated that “On the basis of the principle of accountability and non-impunity, which the Iraqi Promise Entity adopts in its path in support of rights and freedoms; The Iraqi promise launches a workshop to write a draft of the accountability law for political and military leaders involved in acts of repression, violence, sectarian and inciting rhetoric and systematic killing.
The Iraqi Promise Observatory called on "civil society groups, human rights organizations, and specialists in criminal and international law and human rights, to participate in writing the accountability law to achieve punitive justice and to hold accountable all those unlawfully shedding Iraqi blood."
Since the start of the protests in October 2019, dozens of activists have been subjected to assassinations or kidnappings, some of them are still missing, and unidentified gunmen assassinated dozens of activists, media professionals and security experts.
The killing of activists and their assassination attempts took an organized picture, as statistics of organizations and activists indicate that 29 activists were killed during the last four months of last year, along with an attempt to assassinate 30 others, and the crackdown on activists sparked a wave of discontent.
And Amnesty International reports that at least 600 protesters and members of the security forces were killed and more than 28,000 wounded in the October protests, which succeeded in toppling the government of Adel Abdul Mahdi.
