Construction was due to be completed by August 2015, but Turkish, Korean and local companies have only completed 10 percent of their work.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The Kurdistan Regional Government has revived the project to build Dohuk International Airport after a repeated failure that took nearly eight years.
A number of obstacles encountered the completion of Duhok International Airport since the companies began the process of building the strategic project in 2012, before stopping repeatedly.

In 2014, the construction of the airport, located 25 kilometers east of Dohuk, was complicated by the economic crisis, the war against ISIS, and the previous political crisis between Erbil and Baghdad.

Construction was due to be completed by August 2015, but Turkish, Korean and local companies have only completed 10 percent of their work.
The area of the land, on which the airport will be built, is about 21 square kilometers, after the dispute over land ownership was settled and the owners were financially compensated.

In 2013, the government allocated $443 million to build the airport, which many citizens consider a long-awaited dream.
Dohuk Governor Ali Tatar told Kurdistan 24 that he held a meeting with many international companies to resume the construction of Dohuk International Airport "to finish it in a short period of time."
Many locals expressed their happiness with the restoration of the airport project, and said it is a good step that will reduce the time difference for them when traveling abroad.

Residents used to go to Erbil or Sulaymaniyah to travel abroad.
Tatar said that construction work at Duhok International Airport "will start soon" in light of discussions with foreign companies, pointing out that "good steps" have been taken in this regard.
Dohuk International Airport will not only serve the residents of the governorate, but will also benefit many international airports in Europe and the Middle East in general.
Economists say that the completion of the new Duhok airport will bring about a boom in economic and commercial growth in the province and the region in general.

And the Kurdistan Regional Government, headed by Masrour Barzani, has previously stated that the implementation of strategic projects is a top priority for its work, including Dohuk International Airport.

The Kurdistan Region is facing a financial crisis due to Baghdad's failure to pay its financial dues and the collapse of oil prices, which constitute its main income. The regional government says that it is continuing to diversify the sources of income in a way that ensures that it does not depend on one source of income with an unstable price globally.
Dohuk airport is only about 50 km away from Turkish territory and a site through which most of the Turkish goods pass to the Kurdistan Region.
