    The Ministry of Justice announced, on Monday, that it is discussing with the competent authorities the establishment of model correctional complexes and an observation role for juveniles within Baghdad and seven governorates, revealing its intention to make legislative amendments to juvenile laws .
    The Director General of the Juvenile Reform Department in the Ministry, Kamel Amin Hashem, said that "the department held an extensive meeting with the relevant competent authorities in order to develop mechanisms for the establishment of model correctional complexes for juveniles within Baghdad and the governorates ."
    Hashem added, "The meeting also discussed the allocation of 30 dunums for the construction of large complexes that contain appropriate services for the implementation of reform programs for juveniles, as well as addressing the concerned authorities to allocate suitable plots of land in terms of location and space for the establishment of complexes and observations on them ."
    He continued, "The department also discussed the establishment of an observation house to receive detained juveniles within seven governorates: Kirkuk, Salah al-Din, Anbar, Karbala, Babil, Maysan and Dhi Qar, after completing the procedures for allocating and expropriating land by all municipality directorates ."
    He explained that "this measure comes within the framework of the department's endeavor to expand its physical and infrastructure structure in order to reduce overcrowding, in addition to providing the appropriate environment and place for events in accordance with international human rights standards ."
    The Director General of the Juvenile Correction Department referred to the department’s tireless efforts to place the juvenile according to its geographical area and place of residence to alleviate the suffering of juveniles in transportation and travel during family visits, in addition to the ease of following up the legal procedures for him by his relatives, stressing “the department’s intention to make a number of amendments.” Legislative regarding juvenile laws, and in line with the rationale for implementing reform requirements, in addition to reintegrating into society for this category.
