Iraq.. A law is required to protect women and children

In an attempt to address and correct the widespread of violent crimes against children and women, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior called on Parliament to expedite the legislation of the draft law on the protection of women and children.
The Director General of the Iraqi Community Police, Brigadier General Ghaleb Al-Attiyah, revealed that "the directorate recorded during the past year 873 violent cases, distributed as 786 cases against women and 87 cases against children." And he indicated that "the high frequency of these cases, reinforced the urgent need to develop legislative laws or legislate new laws, especially since there are crimes for which there is no legal text, including the crime of child abuse or the crime of electronic extortion, and accordingly the draft that was read before was issued." The previous House of Representatives has two readings, and the third reading is awaiting a vote by the current House of Representatives.”
Observers and civil activists believe that these announced numbers, although they are not small, but the reality on the ground indicates multiple times of these cases, most of which remain secret and the responsible security and health authorities are not informed of their occurrence.
Commenting on the position of the Iraqi Ministry of Interior calling for the adoption of equitable laws for Iraqi women and children, Nour Nafeh, an Iraqi civil and human rights activist, says, “With regard to these increasing and frightening statistics regarding the increase in cases of domestic violence and what women and children are exposed to in particular, there is no doubt that there are many other cases that are not registered in the Police stations, and this sharp rise, even according to this official statistic, pushes us to demand the enactment of laws that deal with such cases, and among the most important of these laws is the Law against Domestic Violence, as well as the Information Crimes Law, which addresses the problem of electronic extortion.”
Now what is in place is to adapt the articles of the old Iraqi Penal Code that was enacted in 1969, as the Iraqi human rights activist and former candidate for parliament explains, adding, “The judiciary is working on the basis of adaptation to these articles and these cases, so the solution is to stop this persistence in targeting Iraqi children and women and violating Their rights, through enacting these two laws, as well as, of course, spreading a culture of opposition to these shameful and violating human rights practices in general and not only to the two segments of women and children within Iraqi society.” Although Iraqi social networks and platforms have witnessed a general welcome for this government trend calling for Parliament to adopt laws that criminalize and prohibit family and societal violence in general against women and children, some of their leaders see this as just throwing the ball into the parliament’s court, which is preoccupied with political issues and problems, without necessarily having a positive impact on addressing This thorny file.
