The Secretary-General of the Arab League announced that the Arab ministers decided to form a ministerial contact committee on the follow-up to the Ukrainian crisis, including (Algeria, Sudan, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, and the Arab member of the Security Council), in order to communicate with all concerned parties to encourage them to find a political solution to the crisis.
Aboul Gheit said - in a joint press conference with the current president of the 157th session of the Arab League Council and Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Bouhabib, at the conclusion of the Arab League Council meeting, we agreed on the need to reach a quick settlement to end the crisis because that would lead to stabilizing the situation.
He said that there is much talk about changing the global system, but the global system is governed by what the three parties agreed upon after the World War, the United States, the Soviet Union and Britain, according to which the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and all the major institutions and arrangements were established.
He said that there are talks about changing the international system, i.e. changing the status of the Security Council. These ideas that some people in the Western world talk about have restrictions because the United Nations charters can only be changed with the approval of the permanent members of the Security Council.
And he added, “But it is the international situation that is in very danger as a result of the Ukrainian crisis, because there is a party that is being pushed into military confrontations, and it is a nuclear power, and this is what must be paid attention to, indicating that he is a believer in diplomatic work, which leads to settlements no matter how long it takes.”
The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Aboul Gheit, also announced that Algeria informed the Arab foreign ministers of its intention to hold the next Arab summit, which it will host on the first and second of November 2022, and that Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra presented it during the consultative meeting of Arab foreign ministers that preceded the opening session The Arab League Council - Algeria’s intention to hold the Arab summit on the first and second of November 2022 over two days, noting that the ministers discussed the topic of the summit and heard a report on it from the Algerian minister.
Aboul Gheit said that the Arab countries endorsed Algeria's proposal regarding the date of the summit and did not object
He said that from October 24 and 25 to November 2, it will be a period of intense work for joint Arab action in Algeria.
On the issue of Syria’s return to its seat in the Arab League, Aboul Gheit said that this issue was not discussed in the general context or the general Arab framework today, neither in the consultative meeting nor in the ministerial meetings of the regular session of the League Council, because this issue will be left for bilateral contacts between the Arab countries each other. , If there is agreement to return the membership, the matter will be done, and added, “But I have not observed the existence of this agreement yet.”
Aboul Gheit praised Algeria’s enthusiasm for the upcoming Arab summit to be the beginning of securing effective Arab unity and facing challenges, pointing out that it presented its vision for the form of convening this summit and its previous meetings and the consultation session between Arab leaders and Arab foreign ministers, perhaps a gesture to improve the performance of Arab action.
He referred to the participation of 18 Arab foreign ministers in today's meeting, which expresses the enthusiasm of Arab countries to activate joint Arab action.
Aboul Gheit said that we discussed the repercussions of the war in Ukraine, warning of its effects on various Arab countries, especially in the economic field with regard to energy and grain prices. He said that the subject had received extensive discussions.
For his part, the Lebanese Foreign Minister affirmed that the Arabs took a unified position on the Ukrainian crisis, and stressed not to politicize international institutions.
He said that the three ministerial committees emanating from the Arab League Council met before the start of the regular session, namely the Turkish Interference Committee and the Iranian Committee in the Internal Affairs of Arab Countries, which submitted a statement and a draft resolution that was approved.
There was also a meeting of the Al-Quds Committee, which is a broader committee, and it listened to two oral reports from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jordan and Palestine, in which they presented the Israeli violations in Jerusalem, and issued a statement in this regard.
